It was "a beautiful Virginia day" (as Chuck always says), with the sun rise lighting up the Blue Ridge Mountains (as seen from our hospital).

Sure was tickled when they brought in the baby's bed/cart with 1 of the blankets sewn & donated by the law families ladies club. Yeah TNLC!

Well, Ashley doesn't want to announce the sex until his/her sisters find out. Give me 30 mins; unless somebody in Lex wants to go help Nana.

At this moment, let's point out how excited & anxious & bursting w/ energy you are to know if it's a girl or boy. A bit more interesting...

Epidural in & water broken. Ashley napping, contractions steady. Dr.'s guess = boy, 7 lbs. 8 oz. at 3:30 PM. I (Chuck) say no way by then, but we can hope.

Grrr! Hospital called to say they may not have bed space to induce labor tomorrow. It only has 300 deliveries a year! We'll see in am.

Name Game & Patience

This past week, all Chuck and I have been trying to figure out is what we would name a baby girl. Our boy name (Edward William) has been picked out since I was pregnant with Leland and is just waiting to be used. We really like using family names. Both of our girls' first and middle names can be found in our lists of ancestors. I would like to continue in that tradition. It's been hard choosing a favorite though.
Chuck has the idea that since this baby will be born close to July 4th, then the name should be patriotic. I'm not so keen on that idea. Here are some of his ideas:
Yesterday, my aunt came to our house for the day. I was able to run a lot of errands and just wandered around Wal-Mart for a while. It's amazing how quickly you can get things done with out lugging 2 kids around with you. Chuck and I also were able to go out to dinner. It was really nice and the girls had so much fun with her.
I'm trying to be patient for this last week of pregnancy. I think most pregnant women are just done and ready to have the baby by the end. I keep reminding myself that a baby is a whole lot easier to take care of inside my belly. I am pretty uncomfortable, but it's not unbearable. I am choosing to be induced on July 1st. When you have older kids to make arrangements for, scheduling something is extremely convenient. Part of me would like to wait for the possibility of a July 4th baby, but I'm not that patient.
[Chuck's addition: In the comments, people asked about naming the baby Lexington, which we strongly considered along with Alexis or Alexandra and calling her Lexi. We both love it, but we never set out to have all L names and we don't really want to establish that trend. But it is not completely off the table.]

- Liberty Belle
- Glory
- Star
- Amber (as in waves of grain)
- Justice
- Reagan
- Charlotte
- Virginia
- Carolina
- Brigetta
- Annalee
- Isabelle

It's a .....

When I was in NC just a little bit ago we also stopped and spent a night with the McBride's. We always like to pack in as many cousin visits as possible when in NC. My brother-in-law works for GE selling ultrasound machines and one great benefit of that is he has an ultrasound machine at home. Fun to have lying around in the house when you are pregnant.
So I got to just sit and look at our baby for a total of probably 2 or more hours on the ultrasound. It was so much fun to watch the baby move and squirm as I was also feeling the baby move and squirm. When you have an ultrasound at the doctor it seems to go so quick while they look and measure everything. This was just at my leisure while on a comfy couch. It was great, except for my belly being a sticky, gooey mess from all the gel we used over that much time.
The first time Mike, Mitzi, and I searched and searched for hands, feet, face, anything. But all we seemed to be able to identify was a heartbeat. Which is always a comforting thing to see during an ultrasound, but that's all we seemed to be able to find. We did also see the spine and ribs. Mike kept reminding us that he was a salesman, not a doctor. He could tell us what all the buttons do on the machine, but had no clue what to look for on the screen.
The next morning with just Mitzi and I looking, we also only really could identify the heart beating. We did see four limbs, but couldn't really distinguish which were the arms and which we were the legs. You would have thought with SIX pregnancies between the 2 of us we could have found something to identify.
Then Conner, my 3 1/2 year old nephew joined us during the ultrasound. Right off he yells, "I see a pig nose!!" laughing hysterically. It was so funny. Then a few minutes later, "I see it's tail. A pigs tail!!" followed by more laughing.
We don't know if it's a boy or a girl, but according to Conner, It's a.... PIG!

Ultrasound

Today was our ultrasound. Since Lucy was sick yesterday with a stomach bug, we canceled our babysitter, and I took Leland with me while Chuck stayed with Lucy.As you all know, we choose not to find out the sex of our babies and wait for the best surprise of a lifetime. Chuck was a little worried I would find out with him not there, but I love the surprise too much to ruin it.
Leland was very excited to see the baby on the TV screen. The baby was moving around like crazy and made it a little difficult for the doctor to capture the pictures he needed on the first try.
Pictures:

middle - face profile with fist tucked under chin
bottom - shaking the fist at us

Not what I wanted to hear

Disclaimer: I am only 18 weeks pregnant, and I know I barely look pregnant, but still not what I wanted to hear.
Leland after seeing my bare belly, yells: "Mommy, your belly is really big!! Our baby is going to be here soon."
Ashley: Well, we still have about 5 more months before the baby comes and I am going to get bigger than this.
Leland: You are going to be HUGE!
Ashley: Thanks, that makes me feel great.
